NC10

As a quick update, I am writing this entry from my Samsung NC10. After many months of fiddling with various things, I have finally gotten a working Gentoo installation using Openbox as my window manager. I really enjoy this minimalistic environment, especially on this netbook given that it only has a 1024×600 native resolution. Thus, maximising screen real estate is a primary concern. As Openbox is only a window manager, I don’t have to worry about all those other components of a larger desktop environment, like a panel at the bottom. 😉

Anyway, there are many things left to be done before I am completely satisfied with the installation. I need to go through and set up more intricate ACPI rules for governing power management, map the function keys that I can (backlight control, volume up/down/mute, et cetera), and aesthetic elements like fonts, GTK themes, and icons.

That’s all for now. 🙂

Grad school update number 238984 (approximately)

Just another quick update on the graduate school applications statuses (I really wish the correct plural of “status” was “statii” [just because I like the way it sounds]). Anyway, I was rejected by Memphis. Click the link below for the updated chart:

YAGSU

Yup, it is time for Yet Another Grad School Update. I just received an email from Auburn, and they cannot offer me an interview. I’m a bit disappointed by that one as well, but two of my top schools offered me interviews so I’m fine with the rejection.
