Spending time with Mom

Mom and I got together today around 10:00, and planned out some fun stuff for celebrating my birthday. Firstly, we went to see the movie Thor at the theatre. It was really entertaining; lots of neat special effects, a couple funny lines, gobs of action sequences, and certainly an interesting interpretation of the myth. What Mom and I both found interesting was the number of parents that brought their young children to see the movie. I would approximate that there were at least 30 kids under the age of twelve in the theatre. With all of the violence and intense action, I would have thought that many of the kids would have been scared (especially the ones that were under eight). Though I think it should be left to the parents to decide what their children watch, I think that there were many choices for kid-friendly movies that would have been more appropriate (Rio, Hop, et cetera).

We also went to a great bakery, and bought some of my favourite cookies. I only wanted a few to satisfy my sweet tooth, but Mom insisted on a dozen; guess I’ll be eating them for the next several days. 🙂 After the bakery, we went to get a quick lunch at this new Thai place near her house. Being somewhere between a take-out style place, and a sit-down restaurant, I was really surprised at the quality of the food. All of the vegetables were fresh, and cooked nicely.

After lunch, we went back to the house and just spent some time sitting outside and chatting. It is always nice to get to spend the day with Mom, and I wish we had time to do so more often.

Tis that day once again

The day that comes once a year, every year without fail… my birthday. Anyway, I’m planning on going out for dinner, and possibly watching a movie or something else. Nothing too exciting, as I’m getting too old (26) to have a bunch of excitement. :-p

xorg-1.10.1, nvidia-drivers-270.41.03, and the terminal emulator

Ever since the last system update (which included xorg-1.10.1 and nvidia-drivers-270.41.03), I have had an annoying problem regarding desktop drawing. Any time that I open LXterminal, a black box the same size as the default terminal window appears in the upper-left corner of my primary display. Interestingly, it only seems to happen when I open up a terminal emulator. Even more interestingly, it happens with any terminal emulator that I use. I briefly installed terminal (the default in Xfce), and gnome-terminal, and they both exhibited the same problem. I’m going to try a few more tests before filing a bug in either the Gentoo Bugzilla, or an appropriate upstream bug system. If anyone has done more extensive troubleshooting, please let me know.
